Tank Container Testing 1496-3

At the end of April 2021, CCT had the pleasure of helping test a 20 foot Tank Container. The purpose of the tests was to certify it for CSC and ISO using the standards set forward by ISO 1496-3. The container had 12 carbon fiber protected tanks used for hauling natural gas. The tanks were about 19 feet long and around 3 feet in diameter. The tank containers engineer called this an intermodal pipeline built for transit in areas where an underground pipeline is impossible. Due to the lack of space internally to load test weight per ISO 1496-3 ruling on loaded weight safety factor. The tanks were loaded with 833 litres and above to get us the necessary weight at 1R or one multiplied by the intended Max Gross Weight of the container. The container passed all necessary tests with minuscule change in its original structure, allowing it to be certified for safe travel. The picture above depicts the action of setting up the tank container for ISO 1496-3 test number 5, Internal Restraint (longtiduinal). Chains were strategically patterned hooking into a 100K top lifting forklift. Then, the hooks of the chain were secured into the top corner castings. The container was lifted up from a standard mobile position to an upright postion where it is standing on its front/rear. The purpose of the test is to prove that the frame of the container is strong enough to take the inertia of a loaded tank(s), as well as the tank(s) can withstand the pressure. The container is to stand on its head for 5 minutes without failure or deformation that would render it unusable, and the tanks are to not leak. This test was strategically completed right before the tests that require just a container at its tare condition. For that reason, the container was left on its head and the valves were opened to drain before returning to its transport position.
